Chapter 3 - Business Analysis Planning and Monitoring

These are some of the business approaches which are identified for the work of a business analyst
  • Plan Business Analysis Approach
This approach is to decide on an effective method to perform business analytical tasks. A        business analyst can identify many steps for business analysis which can change during the whole process. The business analysis approach should include the following:
  • Manage risks - The quality of a task which a business analyst performs can drastically decrease if the risks involved are not managed appropriately. So, the business analyst should take care of all the risks during performing the tasks.
  • Align Goals
  • Coordinate tasks
  • Leverage successes

  • Plan Stakeholder Engagement
The goal of the Plan Stakeholder Engagement is to plan a technique to build a strong relationship with the stakeholders and to maintain this working relationship with them. The analysis of this approach will find all the stakeholders and analyze their usual traits. The business analyst should consider the business needs and use the Business Analysis Approach to consider the analysis for the stakeholders. The elements, stakeholder collaboration, and the stakeholder communication needs are the concepts a business analyst will consider while analyzing the relationship.

  • Plan Business Analysis Governance
The purpose of this analysis is to define how major decisions are made regarding designs, requirements, change control, approvals and the priorities for the business. During a governance activity, a business analyst identifies the people who are involved in the prioritization and how the work will be prioritized, how the change is made in the business and who has the authority to do the change and who can approve the change and how the change can be recorded in the business.

  • Plan Business Analysis Information Management
During this plan, the business analyst analyzes how the information acquired during the business is stored and accessed. This mainly involves how the information is arranged and sorted, at what level of detailing should the information be acquired, how the information is utilized throughout the organization, how the information is stored and reached and what are the brief descriptions about the information that must be maintained.

  • Identify Business Analysis Performance Improvements
This approach considers the concept of the improvement process in the work of a business analyst, the work is assessed and a plan is identified to make improvements where required. To fully complete this plan the first step is the performance analysis where the performance of the business analyst is assessed. Next are the assessment measures in which the new measures for the help of the business analyst are identified like knowledge, effectiveness, timeliness etc. After that, the results are analyzed and the last various actions are taken for the improvement of the work done by the business analyst.

This model of work has four views of work which are What, Now, How and Future. The two horizontal and the vertical axes separate What from How, and Now from the Future. The Brown Cow Model illustrates four points of view that help to uncover the real business problem and identify useful innovations. Generally, it is not sufficient to have only two views of business - the "as is" and the "to be". To get a true light on the business problem and to ensure innovations, more views are necessary. The Brown Cow Model in Agile

There are reports stating, “agile does not help in innovation”. As there is a pressure to develop anything, they can produce within the time allowed. The greatest pressure is for maintaining the speed of the project, not for its innovative solutions. When we talk about innovation it means new thinking. We do not mean that innovation is invention. Innovation is different thinking about the business problem with the intention of finding beneficial solutions. User stories that are not based on real business stories will always have a hard time being innovative.
